Review #59: Universe Legends Cosmos
Hello, folks! After the blitz of reviews in July, about half of August has slipped by where the only update has been one of Rated X's guest reviews. Sorry about that! But I expected August wouldn't be quite as prolific, so there you go. Anyway, we'll kick things off by looking at the 2009 Legends Class figure of Cosmos that appeared in the Universe toy line.
The original Cosmos was an oddity in the pre-1986 film Transformers toy line, that up until that point had mainly had figures that had somewhat realistic Earth-based alt modes. So what alt mode did Cosmos have? Why, he was a little green UFO!
This 2009 figure replicates that nicely. Like the original, it has a red dot on top that will become the robot mode's head upon transformation. Also like the original, there are some yellow accents -- here taking the form of a big fin on the UFO's back end that is an addition to this version of Cosmos. Also new is some silver detailing that looks like some sort of alien script. Not my favorite addition, but not one that takes away from things too much. Also added here, more visible in photos then it is to the naked eye, is a blue ring around the outer edge of the alt mode. This is a nice addition that helps to subtly break things up a bit. An addition that I made was a Reprolabel giving the alt mode a faction symbol. |
Robot mode gives us a nice little Cosmos. He's a bit simplistic, but pretty good for a Legends class figure of his time. He's certainly an upgrade from his original 1985 mini-bot figure!
His articulation is limited pretty much to what is needed for transformation, which is not entirely unusual for a Legends class figure of this era. That being said, it is serviceable. He has ball jointed shoulders and hips, and his knees can bend. That's it! Yes, his arms do look just like two big green curved pieces of plastic. This is slightly unfortunate. However, if you look at the figure from an angle that shows the inner edge of the arms, you can see some molded detail that looks a bit like fists inside. |
To the left, Cosmos is pictured with a standard sized DVD case for a size comparison.
So, Cosmos! This 2009 offering is a decent modernized representation of the character that can look good in your "Classics" style collection. So, if you don't already have him and you'd like a Cosmos, do I recommend getting him? Eh, not really, unless you're a Cosmos completionist. Surprisingly, for a character who isn't that prominent, Hasbro's gone and made a new one! Coming out very soon (and possibly already out in some markets) is a new, slightly larger and much better looking Legends Class Cosmos figure, so if you just want one Cosmos to fill a spot in your collection, I'd say keep an eye out for that one! But, much like the purpose of my recent Arcee review, I thought I'd take a quick look at this figure before his time was completely past. He was great for his time, and I've enjoyed having him! But... I do also look forward to getting to review the new version for you! Review added 16 August 2014 by Yotsuya. Comments are welcomed! |
Only a few days left in the epically failing Yotsuya's Reviews Kickstarter! Think it'll work? It'll take a miracle! But... stranger things have happened! So you never know. Want to have a part in making that miracle a reality? Check the Kickstarter out now, before it is too late!
